EPOS H6Pro Open Acoustic Wired Headphones Review – They’re Really Just Fine

EPOS H6Pro Open Acoustic Wired Headphones Review – Choosing a new pair of headphones is a difficult choice no matter how you plan to use them, though there’s another layer of complications when choosing gaming headphones. The EPOS H6Pro Open Acoustic Wired Headphones I should say right off the bat wouldn’t be a bad purchase for anyone with the available cash, but it might not be the best one either.

The long and short of it is that if you’re someone who wants a pair of gaming headphones that can immerse you into deep, narrative games while also being great for multiplayer games, then the EPOS H6Pro isn’t the best choice. In fact, it’s not the best choice really for any use case, it just isn’t the worst one for any of them either.

EPOS H6Pro Open Acoustic Wired Headphones Review – They’re Really Just Fine

Feeling Nice Counts Almost As Much As Sounding Nice

Saying that something is “just fine” might not be the exact thing anyone wants to read from a review, but trust me when I say your purchase wouldn’t be wasted here. You could put your funds to better use, though.

One thing that you are at least paying for is the premium look and feel to these headphones. After spending hours with them the past two and half weeks, I can honestly say they are comfy. Other over ear headphones start to bother me almost always before I take them off if I’m gaming, and with the H6Pro is was quite the opposite.

When it comes to other features that are on the surface, there’s only one form of volume control on the outside of the right ear, a small wheel for a higher or lower volume. This wheel only adjusts the volume of your headphones themselves, mind you, though I usually kept it all the way up to avoid confusion.

The left ear is where your microphone sits, but what’s interesting is that it attaches magnetically. This means you can also practically rip it off at any time, and re-attach it without issue. The filler piece that also comes with the headphones – should you not want the mic hanging off the side – also slots in easily.

Its feels like a small difference from previous headphones I’ve used, but the magnetic attachment just felt convenient and so easy to use. It’s arguably my favourite feature for these headphones.

Sounding Nice Counts More Though

Of course, while comfort is important, the way a pair of headphones feels only goes so far. What’s more important is how they sound, and it;s here where the H6Pro’s mediocrity shines. They simply sound fine. Really, there’s nothing about the sound that blew me away, but there wasn’t anything that I can say I really hated.

It’s not a full sound, and when you’re listening to bass heavy music you can really hear the headphones struggle to output something that doesn’t sound like a bit of a garbled mess. The bass however is the only real obvious issue, everything else about the sound just makes par.

When it comes to games, specifically highly intense multiplayer games, if you’re the kind of competitive gamer looking for headphones to use, these won’t suffice. Not only are they still not as good as other headphones on the market for small, detailed sound that can make or break a match in a battle royale, but according to my cracking Apex Legends partner Kate, the mic’s sensitive enough to pick up what the headphones are putting out. So not only did she have to deal with hearing my voice, but her own voice echoed back to her.

That kind of stuff is frankly unacceptable if you really want a competitive edge, but for anyone just looking for reliable headphones that will get the job done in a party chat, the H6Pro would fit right in.

A Bit Of The Old Stuff, Bit Of The New Stuff, But Not Really Enough Of Anything

As someone who got the first pair of wireless headphones I could when wireless products first rolled out to market, it felt weird to be in 2021 using a pair of wired headphones so consistently again. While a lot has changed since the dawn of wireless headphones, a lot has stayed the same.

Generally, wired is better in terms of quality, and now that you can plug right into your controller, the wired factor isn’t a factor at all, at least not a negative one.

The removable microphone feels much more modern, though it’s unfortunate the features stop there. Honestly, I never thought not being able to press against the outside of my headphone ear to pause my song would annoy me, but it does greatly. It might not for you, but with only the one single volume control on the right ear, and the microphone on the left, it feels slightly feature bare.

No difference in sound settings, no setting to turn down your microphone monitor, nothing to really give you a sense of personalization that is great to develop with a pair of headphones, so that everything sounds great for you every time.

Once again this brings me back to why the EPOS H6 Pro Open Acoustic Wired Headphones are just fine. It doesn’t even have a lot of features; it’s a straightforward pair of headphones that is focused more on convenience across mediums and ease of use.

They’re Fine, If That’s What You’re Looking For

When it comes down to it, the EPOS H6PRo Open Acoustic Wired Headphones are on the whole just fine, and will likely last you some time so long as you take care of them. The build quality and comfort level on them help make them a great choice for a more casual player, though for anyone competitive you’ll want to look elsewhere.

I threw around the word mediocre, but not entirely as a negative. I need my tech to work for me, not necessarily for anyone else. So truly, its lack of features mixed with a passable sound quality and good comfort levels make for an overall decent pair of headphones.

Besides the “just fine-ness” of it all, the final pain point unfortunately is the price. At $179 USD these headphones become much harder to recommend unless you want to just buy one pair for everything, gaming, music, podcasts, videos, you name it, and the H6Pro’s will be just fine at them all.

For a one size fits all use case it’s not a bad price, but that makes them difficult to recommend for any specific use case, even gaming.

So as long as the EPOS H6Pro Open Acoustic Wired Headphones are what you’re looking for, as a casual user, then I’ve no problem recommending them. I’ve definitely enjoyed my time with them, but the jack-of-all-trades approach is their ultimate failing point.
