Earlier this week Ubisoft announced that it’s developing a game based on the James Cameron movie Avatar. The game will be the work of Tom Clancy’s The Divison developer, Massive Entertainment, putting in doubt the studio’s capability to continue to adequately support its popular online post-apocalyptic shooter.
Ubisoft has released a statement addressing these concerns and assuring fans that a separate team inside Massive will be working on Avatar and on-going support for The Division will be unaffected by the project.
In a statement to Eurogamer, Ubisoft said:
“Avatar is a new project with its own dedicated team and Massive is currently recruiting top talent to work on it. Avatar’s development has no impact on the team working on The Division or on our plans to continually support and update the game and brand for the long term.
"We’re proud of what the team has accomplished with The Division, thankful for our community’s dedication, and looking forward to sharing more about what’s coming next for the game very soon."
On February 28 The Division received a major update that added a wealth of new content including additional Dark Zone areas and more character customisation options. Ubisoft also released the Last Stand DLC, the third and final expansion offered as part of the game’s Season Pass. Whether Ubisoft will continue to expand the game beyond its planned year one content or broaden the series with a sequel remains to be seen.
In our review, we said, "post-pandemic New York City is a terrifying vision, but it’s not one that you’ll likely want to leave for some time."
