So let’s start with the obvious stuff. The Xbox Series X internal SSD is 1TB in size, whereas the PS5 SSD clocks in at an odd 825GB. So yep, your eyes do not lie to you – the Xbox Series X internal SSD is larger than the one found in the PS5. However, there is a very good reason why Sony went for an 825GB SSD rather than a 1TB SSD.

Why Did Sony Make The PS5 SSD 825GB?
There’s no getting around it – 825GB is an odd number for any storage device and yet, there is a method to the madness. While off-the-shelf consumer SSD solutions tend to be 512GB or 1TB in size on average, Sony have gone for 825GB because the PS5’s SSD solution is proprietary and quite simply does not exist anywhere on shop shelves right now.
There is an additional design reason for the odd size too, as the 825GB figure proves to be best match for the PS5’s lightning fast 12 channel interface meaning that the SSD is absolutely tuned to run as fast as it can. Speaking of speed…
Speed Kills…Xbox Series X
While the Xbox Series X SSD does indeed have a meager advantage in storage size (which in itself is reduced by the variety of expandable options available to PS5), it’s really in the performance category that Microsoft’s console takes an absolute beating.

The figures don’t lie – the PS5 SSD runs more than twice the speed of the Xbox Series X SSD in Raw mode and nearly twice as fast in compressed. This is a game changer, not least because not only can Sony (and you) finally say goodbye to the excruciatingly long ‘update copying’ process that would make every patch download an absolute chore, but also because Sony’s super fast custom SSD also means a return to the cartridge days of old where games would just boot up and play immediately.
So yeah, the PS5 SSD is a lot better than the Xbox Series X SSD.
