Earlier this week Bend Studio announced that Days Gone will run at up to 4K 60 FPS on PS5 and now that the backwards compatibility embargo has lifted for the PS5 we can give our hands-on impressions of the game running on the system and its safe to say that the game is effectively reborn and an experience worth revisiting again.
An early showcase of the sorts of results that Sony’s focus on enhanced backwards compatibility can yield, the PS5 patch that Days Gone now enjoys is transformative. With a much welcome bump to 4K resolution, Sony Bend’s post-apocalyptic, open-world adventure has never looked better, with its nightmarish depiction of freak-infested Oregon resolving more horrific detail than ever before.
And then there’s the framerate. Doubled from 30 to 60 frames per second, the result is immediately noticeable and satisfying. Days Gone doesn’t just look smoother now, it’s also much more responsive to play too and when taken in tandem with the increase in resolution, Days Gone can confidently stand side by side with its other PlayStation exclusive brethren in the presentation stakes. If the improvements wrought upon Days Gone by its PS5 focused update are an indicator about what we can expect from similarly scoped improvements to other PS4 titles, it’s difficult to not get very excited indeed.
Days Gone is certainly one of the more impressive titles showcased in PS5’s backwards compatibility and you can read our full thoughts on the feature and the PlayStation 5 as a whole in our hardware review. You can also see 15 minutes of the game running through backwards compatibility below:
