Daedalic Entertainment have announced Lord of the Rings: Gollum for release on PC “and all relevant console platforms at the time” (cough – PS5) sometime in 2021 (that’s right – 2021).
Lord of the Rings: Gollum set for PS4 & PS5 release
Framed as a narrative adventure which follows the adventures of its titular protagonist, Lord of the Rings: Gollum chronicles the events of his life after he obtains the One Ring in events which take place before the books and all the currently released films.
Wonderfully, Lord of the Rings: Gollum is the first in a planned series of games resulting from collaboration between Daedealic Entertainment and Middle-Earth Enterprises.
“Our goal was to present a storytelling experience,” Daedalic Entertainment CEO and co-founder Carsten Fichtelmann says. “About four years ago, I caught Middle-earth Enterprises in Berkeley, maybe like Peter Jackson did 20 years ago, and I said we’re interested in licensing Lord of the Rings. After some negotiations, it was clear that the Tolkien estate looked for a company that was capable of doing something which is more story-orientated than some of the other products that came out over the last years.”
Daedalic Entertainment have actually set a decent precedent for adapting literary properties into games. Just last year the German developer concluded its episodic adventure based on Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth historical fiction novel – and that was brilliant, so hopes are high that they can weave some magic with the expansive setting of Middle-Earth and the story of its most wretched denizen, Gollum.
While there’s nothing in the way of screenshots or video for Lord of the Rings: Gollum as of right now, the official logo has been released for the game which you can see below.
