PS3 System Update 4.89, PS Vita System Update 3.74 Disable PSN Account Creation

Sony Interactive Entertainment has pushed out PS3 system update 4.89 and PS Vita system update 3.74, both of which disable the ability to create PSN accounts on their respective systems.

In addition, the updates have given the boot to a number of account management settings, and users now require a third-party device such as a smartphone to recover a lost password. If you want to create a new account, you’ll now have to use a smartphone or your PC to do so.

Sony has been slowly winding down support for legacy consoles over the past year or so, although its decision to shutter the PS3 and PS Vita stores was met with considerable backlash. As such, while the PSP store still shut up shop, the PS3 and PS Vita offerings will remain open.
